Shockey-Sponsored Virginia Tech Team Wins Third Place in PCI's 2008 "Big Beam" Contest The Shockey Precast Group is proud to announce that Virginia Tech (sponsored and mentored by The Shockey Precast Group) won Third Place in the regional judging of PCI’s 2008 Big Beam Contest, and received “Best Report” in the national judging. The Big Beam contest is an annual student engineering design contest sponsored by The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. This year, a record 54 universities participated in the competition, which involved designing, constructing, and load-testing a scale model prestressed concrete beam. Overall scoring was based upon design, analysis, economy, performance, and reporting. The Virginia Tech team was led by graduate student Nick Comforter, who was also a first-time Engineering intern with SPG this summer. The Virginia Tech team represents Shockey’s first year as a big-beam sponsor. Shockey engineer Mike King served as the team coach and mentor for the team. Virginia Tech's "big beam" was produced at Shockey's Fredericksburg plant. Congratulations Virginia Tech!
